Hey, I’m a left footer and I really have trouble delivering power to an
inside curler free kick, One thing I’m curious about is, Does the range and power come from an instant hit of the ball, or is the follow through the reason why the ball is in the air and curling. Oh, to ease your curiosity, I know you have to bend back though it hasn’t generated anymore finesse or height.

Cheers and take care all!!!

The curl, power and accuracy would be in the impact but also a lot to do with the follow thru

  • Mike says:

The range and power most definitely come from the follow through, it influences how much drive you put behind the ball: a longer follow through means your putting your full body weight behind the ball and thus are driving the ball with great force while, in contrast, a non existent quicker follow through is used to float the ball in the air (albeit with less distance). Leaning back simply changes the direction you’re “aiming” the ball, when you lean back you open up your body towards the sky and thus the ball would be driven upwards. Only with a short, quick follow through can you really “float” a ball into the air and give it that extra bit of finesse you might be looking for.

The bend you put on a ball is influenced by where you strike the ball and with how much force. If you want to bend a ball you would want to strike the ball towards the outside using more the insole of your foot rather than striking it dead-on with the laces. The more off-center you hit the ball, or the more you graze or “skin” it, the crazier the spin will be (but you also must take into account how hard your hitting the ball and the follow through). The same is true of when you want to bend the ball with the outside of your foot, however it is a lot more difficult and I really wouldn’t recommend using it on crosses or free kicks where you’re trying to float a ball in.
