The NBA is ALL OVER China. Look at basketball games in China. They are CRAZY about the sport over there.

FIFA does absolutely nothing to get Americans interested in the game. They don’t give out free balls, hold events all over America to teach kids about the game, don’t try to reach out to young male athletes, don’t go to inner cities and put up soccer fields or anything. It’s shameful. They don’t even try to eliminate the perception that soccer players don’t make as much as American professional athletes.

Are they just arrogant, or stupid?
We can blame the MLS for being sort of aloof too.

12 Responses to “Does FIFA do a horrible job at marketing soccer to Americans?”

  • MtoR signing up is easy says:

Well they let you have the competition there, what more do you want? a change of the rules?

  • I'm Ron Burgundy? says:

Exactly, not enough FIFA intervention. FIFA will promote the sport in third world counties, which is admirable, but won’t promote it in possibly the biggest revenue possibility in the world.

  • Sexxon says:

Why would FIFA do that? FIFA doesn’t need to advertise, that’s the United States responsibility. Concacaf should try harder.

  • Cannibal Emma says:

I like how you say the only two possibilities can be arrogance or stupidity.
You sound pretty arrogant and stupid yourself. :)

  • A ! says:

haha , then why is the fifa soccer world cup the MOST watched series all over the world ?
i think they’re doing a good enough job because it is pretty much sponsored by america and most of the people in america are watching it so what else can they do ? i don’t blame you for saying that they don’t reach out to male athletes but it’s only because soccer is to the foriegn countries just as baseball is to america. that’s just the way it is. you can sponsor and persuade as much as you want , but if it isn’t want people want to do then they aren’t doing it.

    hope i helped !

  • Proud to be a Yank ! says:

I agree with you! FIFA and their referee obviously hates US after not one but TWO disallowed goals. The MLS is at fault also too for encouraing Americans to watch the the WC.

  • Disco Stick says:

Soccer isn’t exactly big in the USA, and they would have more success in Europe and South America.

Also, do you know we have MLS? But no one cares about it. That’s just how the USA is, we will never be big in soccer as long as baseball and American football is around.

  • Zd says:

FIFA is arrogant, but in reality soccer is doing well in the US. You have a professional league (men’s and women’s) and hosted a World Cup in recent history (1994). Also, a growing Hispanic population (yet not many Hispanic players in the national team?) means the sport is probably gaining a foothold and going strong.

Soccer is not really a niche market anymore, and I love soccer but hated the way ESPN shoved it down everyone’s throats for this World Cup. So maybe FIFA is just letting things come up naturally. Americans already have the best training facilities and way to develop players (think of the development of players for the NBA and NFL). Sooner or later, the kids that chose soccer will get to use those facilities and the Americans will be a team to reckon with.

  • Soulminer says:

I don’t think it can be a top down thing. In all the countries where football/soccer is loved it’s a feeling that has built up naturally from the grass roots. America should build up it’s own football culture and not look for FIFA to parachute something in place from above.

  • Joel V says:

noo FIFA does what its suppose to do. everyone else watces soccer its fault of the americans who dont go to the games or watch anything. why is the US the only country who barely watches it.

  • 80ist says:

Soccer in the USA is a catch 22
The clearest sign of that is Beckham

Soccer cannot grow unless TV supports it
But TV won’t support it if the teams are lousy

Beckham came, conquered and saw and then left.
    Why?

  • winterwolf_au says:

If things are good enough to have a national league, then FIFA’s intervention isn’t required. The ball is in the hands (or at the feet) of the USSF, and it’s their job to promote the game in the US.
